    KIPP Stand Academy, in Minneapolis, is part of the nation-wide “Knowledge Is Power Program” which is a network of free, open- enrollment public schools which are committed to the same philosophies of no shortcuts and high expectations for students. We believe in doing what-ever it takes to help our kids climb the mountain to college. We currently have grades 5-8 with projected enrollment of 275 students for 2014-2015.

  • Description

    Seeking a Licensed School Nurse to fill a unique half-time position at our growing school. This new role will establish best-practice health monitoring as our school transitions from contracted R.N. services to an in-house school nurse. This role will also coordinate a new wellness program funded with a three-year grant from the KIPP Foundation to promote and measure wellness initiatives among our staff, students and families. We seek an individual with experience effectively meeting the health needs of low-income families who is also eager to create an innovative and sustainable wellness program for our growing network and to share ideas within the national KIPP network of 141 charter schools.


    • Utilize the nursing process components of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, an evaluation to care for ill students during the school day
    • Promote health education and preventative health practices for students
    • Make referrals and maintain up to date contact information for primary, urgent and emergent medical and dental care service providers as needed
    • Conduct annual Vision Screening
    • Conduct annual Hearing Screening
    • Meet as a member of IEP teams as needed, gather information and give input for intervention strategies
    • Create and update medical plans for students with health concerns that require classroom accommodations
    • Maintain individual student health folder
    • Ensure students have met minimum immunization requirements for school entry
    • Work with the Physical Education teacher to administer and record Presidential Fitness and Y-Balance tests,
    • Work with staff to incorporate more movement into the school day, including use of the fields, hiking and biking trails at our new Shingle Creek campus,
    • Guide staff efforts to identify and implement personal wellness goals, including potential allocation of grant funds to meet identified wellness needs,
    • Develop and implement three all-school campaigns: Plant Power, Less Sit/More Fit, and Mini-Soda, to raise awareness, measure current behaviors and promote new healthy habits,
    • Collaborate with existing school partners such as our food vendor and the Northside Achievement Zone and build new community partnerships as appropriate,
    • Coordinate with development staff and KIPP colleagues at five other pilot sites to share outcomes and ideas with the goal of building replicable wellness program models.
  • Qualifications
    • Two years or more of relative experience
    • Must be a Licensed School Nurse
    • Must have demonstrated success working in an urban environment
    • Excellent written and oral skills
    • Ability to pass criminal background check

  • SNOM Guidelines for Developing Policies regarding Stocking Epinephrine Auto-injectors in Schools
    A Minnesota law was passed in November 2013 which allows school districts to keep a stock supply of epinephrine auto-injectors.
    The SNOM Legislative Committee, in cooperation with the MN School Boards Association,  created a document to help school districts understand the benefits and challenges of keeping a supply of epinephrine auto-injectors. The document includes background information, resources, and a list of issues to address when creating policies regarding stock epinephrine.
